We are thrilled to welcome to the team: Josh, our new Mobile Technical Lead, and Luke, our new Web Developer who bring their own experience, perspective, and passion to the work we do. We sat down with them to find out a little more about their journeys, what they will be working on, and what life looks like outside of the office.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to join Sonin?
Josh: I studied at Newcastle University and joined an iGaming company straight after graduating as an Android developer. Over the last seven years, I worked across all kinds of projects and eventually grew into a more senior engineering role. When that chapter came to an end, I was looking for somewhere I could work on genuinely interesting mobile projects, grow my skills beyond Android, and develop as a technical leader. Sonin ticked all of those boxes, and the culture I got a feel for throughout the interview process really sealed it. It was clearly a team I wanted to be part of.
Luke: I spent five years at a web agency before joining Sonin, and before that I did freelance work after graduating from university. I made the move to Sonin to take the next step in my progression, both in terms of working at a larger company with higher demands and expectations than I had experienced before, and in terms of having the space to work towards personal development goals I genuinely care about.
What will your role involve, and what are you most excited about working on?
Josh: I will be guiding the mobile team across all things technical, while staying hands-on with development across client projects. What I am most looking forward to is taking real ownership of a greenfield project from the ground up and working with the team to iterate on our processes and the technologies we use. There is a genuine opportunity to shape how we build here, and that is exciting.
Luke: My role involves developing maintainable, readable code that stands the test of time and makes life easier for everyone who touches it. What I am most excited about is the opportunity to work on greenfield projects for bigger clients, and to learn from people who are vastly more experienced than I am. That combination does not come along very often, and I intend to make the most of it.
What are some of your interests or hobbies outside of work?
Josh: Games, in just about every form! I have a board game collection running into the hundreds and there is always something new to get to the table. I play video games and trading card games regularly too. Beyond that, I love going to live music and theatre, and I have a real fascination with theme parks. I am on a mission to visit as many as I can over the coming years, which is a very enjoyable project to be working on.
Luke: I go to the gym most days after work, which helps me switch off. I am a big rugby fan, though I will freely admit I do not have the bravery to actually play it. I really enjoy travelling, particularly to somewhere sunny with a good beach. And I enjoy gaming, although if I am honest that does not happen nearly as often as it used to!
What has been your first impression of the team and company culture so far?
Josh: Extremely positive. Everyone has been kind, engaged, and thoughtful, and there is a real sense of ownership across the business. People genuinely help wherever they can, and that says a lot about a company’s culture.
Luke: I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone so far. What has impressed me most is the balance between professionalism and making the workplace genuinely friendly and welcoming. Moving from a much smaller company, that was something I was quietly worried about, but I had no need to be.
